PACIFIC STRIKE
RELEASE NOTES 2.0
4/20/94
This file contains manual changes, ref card changes, hints, and other
useful information. Ignore at your own risk!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Controls
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1a. The far right button on the FlightStick Pro functions like the 'T'
key. It will select the next closest air target.
1b. When the joystick calibration routine asks about throttles, it
is referring to the throttle wheel on the FlightStick and
FlightStickPro, not the Thrustmaster Weapons Control system.
1c. ctrl-M toggles the auto-trim feature (defaults to on). With
auto-trim off, you will experience more realistic flight, but
your plane will be harder to control.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Increasing the Speed of Play
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you find that Pacific Strike runs sluggishly on your machine,
you can adjust some of the options to increase the speed of the game:
Turn off the Sky Texture.
Turn off the Water Texture.
Turn off Sound Effects.
Turn off Speech.
Turn off Engine Sound
Turn off Show Weapon
Lower the level of Object Detail, Terrain Texture and Distance.
Note: Using a disk cache is helpful if you want to play with Sound
Effects and Speech on.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Memory Configurations
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The more EMS memory you have available, the more features the game
will have. The minimum amount of EMS required is 2900K.
2900k EMS - Some digital sound
4500K EMS - All digital sound, faster loading
The optimum configuration would be an 8 megabyte machine with a
2 megabyte hard disk cache.
SMARTDRV, from Microsoft, will not work with Pacific Strike in
the WRITE CACHE mode. To use SMARTDRV without a write cache,
type SMARTDRV C. This will allow SMARTDRV to use a read cache,
but will disable the write cache.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Game Play
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Save Games:
Try and make a habit of saving your game after each mission.
Your actions in early missions affect the difficulty of later
missions, and you may wish to replay early portions of the campaign
should the late war be too dificult.
2. Ammo:
Try playing with unlimited ammo on. It might not be realistic, but
it sure is a lot of fun ;)
If you do play with Limited Ammo, try to not put your guns on Full
until you have your target acquired. This will conserve ammo.
3. Sighting.
If you have diffculty finding targets at a waypoint, use the 'T'
key to "target" an enemy plane, then use eyes locked on target 'Y'
or F8 view to see his position relative to your plane.
CTRl-T will target ships and ground targets.
4. Wingmen.
Your squad mates will tend to stay in formation until you give them
a target or instruct them to break formation. When they have no
targets left, they will tend to rejoin your formation.
5. Time Bursting.
Sometimes while holding TIME BURST, your wingmen and enemies will
crash into the ground. Be sure to tell your wingmen to break and
attack when you get into combat to reduce the likliness of this
happening. Also, this will happen less frequently on the higher
difficulty levels such as ACE.
6. Rookie Flight Model
In some of the faster planes such as the Hellcat and Corsair,if you
are playing with ROOKIE flight model, you may attain speeds in a
dogfight which make the plane hard to control. Try changing the flight
model to VETERAN or ACE and this will help slow the plane down. Also,
you can try cutting the throttle all the way down and or using the air
breaks if they are available.
